Papers consist primarily of diaries which begin in 1844, when Wilbur began teaching. The diaries also reflect her involvement in the abolitionist and later suffrage and women's rights movements. They speak as well of her work in the U.S. Patent Office. In particular, they inform concerning the pattern of her family life, and close working relationship with Harriet Jacobs, a former slave, in aid to contrabands and acquaintance with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. In addition, there are some diaries by Wilbur's sister, Mary L. Van Buskirk and 2 photos of Julia Wilbur.

Julia Wilbur was raised a Quaker in Rochester, N.Y. where she attended the Rochester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society and met Harriet Jacobs.
